Delhi Airport generates $5.7bn for Indian GDP

Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport contributed more than $5.7 billion towards India’s gross domestic product (GDP) between 2009 and 2010, according to the country’s first ever economic impact study of an airport.

The ‘Economic Impact of Delhi Airport’, conducted by the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), found that nearly 5% of India’s GDP was generated by the gateway in 2009-10.

The study focused on the impact of Delhi Airport on the regional and the national economies in terms of output, value add and employment.

It discovered that the gateway added $5.7 billion or 0.45% to India’s GDP over the year, which in turn accounted for 13.5% of Delhi’s gross state domestic product (GSDP).

Furthermore, the study said that the airport’s contribution to the economy is likely to increase to $17.7 billion by the year 2020….
