A jetliner in San Francisco bound for London Heathrow was struck by lightning Thursday night, causing the United Airlines plane to return to the airport, officials said.

None of the 258 passengers on the Boeing 777 were injured, officials said. They did not say how far it was from San Francisco International Airport when it was struck.

The stormy weather that hit San Francisco is working its way to Southern California, where April showers were expected to continue as a cold front moved in from the Pacific, forecasters said Friday.

Following scattered showers Friday afternoon and evening, the storm is expected to hit the mountains, causing snow levels to drop as low as 3,500 feet.

“Anyone planning to drive north on Interstate 5 over the Grapevine is advised to check road conditions,” said David Sweet, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service….
