[The Commercial Appeal] Pinnacle Airlines Corp. is projecting that bankruptcy will ground 450 pilots over the next 18 months.

Pinnacle Airlines is filing for bankruptcy protection

The Memphis-based regional airline company said elimination of its United Express and US Airways Express operations by November would force it to furlough nearly 16 percent of its 2,860 pilots.

It’s the first reckoning of how a Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization would affect a Pinnacle workforce of nearly 8,000 people.

Pinnacle sought court protection April 1 after trying for four months to renegotiate revenues from its bigger airline partners and costs of labor, credit, vendors and suppliers.

Impact on the company’s 1,930 Memphis area employees is unclear. Headquarters is here at One Commerce Square Downtown, but only a small fraction of Pinnacle’s flying is done out of Memphis International Airport. Its United Express and US Airways Express flights are flown out of East Coast or Houston airports.

A company statement said, “Our plan for winding down these operations includes exploring every possible option for our people who will be impacted by these decisions. We remain focused on providing our customers with safe, reliable and on-time service.”
