[Airport Informer) In a note to the Star Alliance airlines group, CEO of Heathrow Airport Colin Matthews has confirmed that the new terminal currently referred to as Terminal 2 will be given a royal title.

Terminal 2: The Queen’s Terminal

Today, on the day before the Queen celebrates her official birthday, we are announcing that our new Terminal 2 will be known as ‘Terminal 2: The Queen’s Terminal’, in honour of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Nearly sixty years after the Queen opened the original terminal 2 we’re delighted that she has kindly agreed to give her name to our new terminal.

Terminal 2 has a regal past. The original building was the first passenger terminal at the airport, opened in1955 by the Queen. During fifty-five years of operation over 300 million passengers passed through it. The original terminal was closed in November 2009 and demolished to make way for the construction of a new Terminal 2 designed around the passenger.

 Terminal 2: The Queen’s Terminal will open on 4th June 2014, and Heathrow is proud to continue Her Majesty’s long association with the airport:

 1952: The former Princess Elizabeth returned to Heathrow as Queen Elizabeth II, after her father, George VI, died whilst she was touring Kenya.

 1955: Queen Elizabeth II opened Heathrow’s first permanent passenger terminal, the Europa Building, which was later renamed Terminal 2, as well as the Queen’s Building and the airport’s original control tower.

 1969: Her Majesty formally inaugurated Terminal 1

 1977: Queen Elizabeth II unveiled the London Underground connection between central London and Heathrow – the first link of its kind to connect a capital city with its major airport.

 2008: Terminal 5 was opened by Her Majesty.

 2012: A giant Union Flag with an image of Queen Elizabeth II was painted next to Heathrow’s northern runway to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee.

The terminal is the next major step in the transformation of Heathrow, and will continue the progress the airport has made in recent years with the opening of Terminal 5 and the refurbishment of Terminals 1, 3 and 4. £11bn has been spent on the airport over the last decade and passenger satisfaction scores now rank Heathrow as among the world’s very best large airports…..

[Star Alliance – Press Release] The New Terminal 2 Set to Open on June 4th, 2014

LONDON, U.K. – June 4th, 2013 – Today the countdown to the opening of the new Terminal 2 at London Heathrow Airport begins. In 365 days the home of Star Alliance at Britain’s premier aviation hub will welcome the flying public.

Mark Schwab, CEO Star Alliance commented: “In a year’s time we will ring in a new era for our customers, member carriers and employees at London Heathrow.

The purpose built Terminal 2 will be our home and will offer a superior travel experience to our customers, create new business opportunities for our member carriers and provide an improved working environment for employees.”

With the move to Terminal 2, all 23 Star Alliance member airlines serving Heathrow and representing over 20% of the airports traffic, will for the first time ever operate from a single terminal.

This will give Star Alliance the opportunity to enhance its seamless ‘hub’ experience, increase the number of passengers transferring through Heathrow and provide shorter connecting times between member airlines.

Moreover, the state-of-the art terminal allows Star Alliance to provide a new and improved level of service for passengers, offering today’s air traveller the right balance and choice between technology and the personal touch. Terminal 2 will have more automated processes and common facilities than currently exists in any one terminal at Heathrow, giving passengers more control over their journey.

Operating ‘under one roof’ enables the Star Alliance member carriers to share operational facilities more efficiently, and make the best use of space and services. Together, this will make Terminal 2 a commercially attractive European ‘hub’ option for the airlines.

The Star Alliance carriers will begin to move into Terminal 2 in phases between June and December next year.

From Terminal 2, 23 Star Alliance airlines – Aegean Airlines, Air Canada, Air China, Air New Zealand, ANA, Asiana Airlines, Austrian, Brussels Airlines, Croatia Airlines, EGYPTAIR, Ethiopian Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, SWISS, TAM Airlines, TAP Portugal, Turkish Airlines, THAI, United and US Airways – will provide 136 flights a day to over 51 worldwide destinations. Future member carrier EVA Air will be joining the member carriers in T2 during the course of 2014.

[Star Alliance – Press Release] US Airways and American Airlines have announced that the boards of directors of both companies have unanimously approved a merger agreement.

Operating under the American Airlines name, the combined airline will offer benefits to both airlines’ customers, communities, employees, investors, and creditors.

If the merger gains regulatory approval, US Airways will leave Star Alliance and the merged company will be a member of the oneworld alliance, of which American is a founding member. Until then, US Airways customers will continue to benefit from Star Alliance’s extensive route network.

Announcing the merger, Doug Parker, Chairman and CEO of US Airways, said, “Today marks an exciting new chapter for American Airlines and US Airways. American Airlines is one of the world’s most iconic brands. The combined airline will have the scale, breadth and capabilities to compete more effectively and profitably in the global marketplace.”

Until the merger is complete, American Airlines and US Airways will operate independently, and US remains a full member of Star Alliance. The results of regulatory review are not expected until some time in the third quarter. Star Alliance headquarters will be working with US in the interim to ensure a smooth transition for both US Airways customers and those of other Star Alliance members if the merger goes ahead as expected.

Doug Parker will serve as CEO of the merged airline and a member of the Board of Directors. Parker will assume the additional position of Chairman of the Board.

The combined airline will offer more than 6,700 daily flights to 336 destinations in 56 countries. The combined airline is expected to maintain all hubs currently served by American Airlines and US Airways. Both airlines expect that the regional carriers they own – AMR Corporation’s American Eagle and US Airways’ Piedmont and PSA – will continue to operate as distinct entities. The company will be headquartered in Dallas-Fort Worth and will maintain a significant corporate and operational presence in Phoenix.

Doug Parker said, “I am particularly pleased for the employees of both US Airways and American. This merger will create a stronger company, with the path to improved compensation and benefits and greater long-term opportunities for all our employees. We are grateful to have the support of both companies’ unions and thank them and their leaders for their hard work and vision. The combined airline is planning to take delivery of more than 600 new aircraft, including 517 narrowbody aircraft and 90 widebody international aircraft, most of which will be equipped with advanced in-seat inflight entertainment systems offering thousands of hours of programming, inflight Wi-Fi offering connectivity throughout the world, and “Main Cabin Extra” seating with 4-6 inches of additional legroom in the Main Cabin. The combined carrier’s fleet will also feature fully lie-flat, all-aisle access premium seating on American’s new Boeing 777-300ER aircraft and Airbus 321 Transcontinental deliveries slated for later this year. Similar to US Airways’ Airbus A330 international Envoy service, American will also retrofit existing 777-200 and 767-300 aircraft to include fully lie-flat premium seating in an effort to provide a consistent experience for customers flying on the combined carrier.

Customers can continue to book travel and track and manage flights and frequent flyer activity through AA.com or USAirways.com, and will continue to enjoy all benefits and rewards of the AAdvantage and Dividend Miles frequent flyer programmes. At this time, there are no changes to the frequent flyer programmes of either airline as a result of the merger agreement. All miles in both programmes will continue to be honoured. Upon merger approval, additional information will be provided to customers on any future programme updates, including account consolidation or benefit alignment.

Employees of the combined airline will benefit from being part of a company with a more competitive and stable financial foundation, which will create greater opportunities over the long term. Each carrier’s employees will receive reciprocal travel privileges as quickly as possible. The merger will also provide the path to improved compensation and benefits for employees.

The merger is conditioned on the approval by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York, regulatory approvals, approval by US Airways shareholders, other customary closing conditions, and confirmation and consummation of the Plan. The combination is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2013.

Heathrow Airport today announced that the new Terminal 2 will be home to STAR Alliance and Aer Lingus flights as well as Virgin Atlantic’s domestic routes when it opens in 2014.

The new Terminal 2 will give Heathrow the best passenger facilities of any major hub in Europe. 75% of passengers at Heathrow already rate their experience as ‘Excellent’ or ‘Very Good’ following the opening of Terminal 5 and the refurbishment of Terminals 1, 3 and 4 (up from 41% in 2006). The airline moves announced today would enable the early closure of Terminal 1 which would allow all passengers to travel through new or refurbished terminals from 2016.

The new terminal marks the latest phase of an £11 billion transformation of Heathrow. 20 million passengers a year will eventually use the new terminal, which consists of a main terminal building plus satellite building and aircraft parking stands. The £2.5billion development is the largest privately-funded construction project in the UK and has been delivered at no cost to the taxpayer. 35,000 people will have worked on the terminal over the lifetime of the project.

The decision on which airlines will operate from the terminal follows a nine-month consultation with airlines which was prompted by the sale of bmi to IAG, the owner of British Airways.

Since the review began in March 2012, Heathrow has met with airlines and the Civil Aviation Authority on a regular basis to agree the terms of reference and evaluation process and to listen to feedback. All the relevant data has been shared with all parties to ensure a fair and transparent process. Heathrow is required to treat all airlines equitably, and 18 separate options for the new terminal were considered and assessed against agreed criteria. The process has led to the decision that the following airlines will operate from Terminal 2:

STAR Alliance. The STAR Alliance network is one of three global airline alliances, and the second largest alliance operating from Heathrow. Its airlines currently operate from Terminals 1, 3 and 4. Globally, STAR has the highest number of member airlines, daily flights, and destinations of any airline alliance. Its airline members operating from Heathrow include: Aegean Air, Air Canada, Air China, Air New Zealand, All Nippon Airways, Asiana Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Croatia Airlines, EgyptAir, Ethiopian Airlines, EVA Air, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa German Airlines, SAS Scandinavian Airlines, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, Swiss International Airlines, TAP Air Portugal, Thai Airways International, Turkish Airlines, United Airlines, US Airways.

Aer Lingus. Aer Lingus is the national airline of Ireland and Heathrow’s fourth largest airline. Aer Lingus currently operates from Terminal 1.

Virgin Atlantic. Virgin Atlantic is the UK’s second largest long-haul airline with a fleet of 40 aircraft. From summer 2013, Virgin Atlantic will operate domestic routes from Heathrow to Manchester, Edinburgh and Aberdeen following the award of ‘remedy slots’ as a result of IAG’s acquisition of bmi. These flights will initially operate from Terminal 1 (where bmi was based) before moving to Terminal 2 in 2014. Virgin Atlantic’s international flights will continue to operate from Terminal 3. Heathrow will continue to work with Virgin Atlantic on how its services might be co-located in the future.

Heathrow is still in discussion with those airlines which currently operate from Terminal 1 and are not members of the Star Alliance (El Al, Icelandair, Cyprus Airways, Germanwings and Transaero), about their future location when Terminal 1 closes. We expect to conclude these discussions in early 2013.

[London Evening Standard] Flooded with light under the sweeping arc of its huge roof, Heathrow’s new Terminal 2 begins to take shape. The £2.5 billion structure, which airport bosses hope will transform travellers’ experience, is expected to be completed next year, with the first passengers using it in 2014.

The four-storey glass building is designed to maximise daylight and smooth the movement of passengers, of whom some 20 million a year — at a rate of 3,000 per hour — will pass through.

A distinctive three-waved roof, 54,000 metres square, has been designed by Foster + Partners. It will act as an “intuitive way finder” marking out check-in, security and departures.

Some 28 planes will slot into stands around the terminal in a “toast rack” design that makes the most of Heathrow’s limited space. T2 will serve Star Alliance airlines, including Air Canada, Lufthansa and Thai Airways International, and take Airbus A380s and A320s.

The new terminal is part of a long-term overhaul of the airport that aims to improve customer experience, but will not remedy the problem of capacity, with the two runways already operating nearly at full stretch.

The 1,500-seat departure lounge is a planespotter’s treat, as the 15-metre-high windows look out onto the south runway. Some 3,000 square metres in departures with prime views are earmarked for first and business class. T2 travellers will also have more room to stretch out — project director Duncan Pickard said: “There’s less retail [space] per passenger than T5 but there’s a balance to be struck as retail helps fund a project which has no public money.”

MUMBAI: In a move that would give Jet Airways a cutting edge advantage over its rivals, the country’s largest private carrier is likely to move a large part of its international operations to Munich in Germany by the year end, said two people familiar with the development.

Those in the know of the matter also said the development is a precursor to the Naresh Goyal promoted airline joining Star Alliance, one of the biggest airline alliances in the world that flies over 600 million passengers around the globe annually.

Jet already has a European hub in Brussels, in Belgium which it established in 2007 and it might reduce operations considerably to the European city or slowly shift base to Munich, the exact strategy of the airline for its scissor operations at Brussels could not be ascertained immediately.

Jet Airways spokesperson said the in a reply to ET query that the story is speculative while Jet’s CEO, Nikos Kardsis declined any such move being contemplated by the Indian carrier. Another Jet senior official Sudheer Raghavan also said that the query is speculative.

But the 35 new flights to Munich requested by Jet Airways from the ministry of civil aviation for its winter schedule tell a different story. The move comes at a time when the ministry has allowed private carriers to have equal rights with Air India for international operations.

Jet’s shift in favour of Munich can also be gauged from its recent application when it applied for an additional flight from its current hub at Brussels that came with some great sops in airport charges and an interline agreement with Brussels airlines.

Jet currently operates 200 international flights daily with a fleet of 101 aircraft and is said to be looking to add some more wide-body aircraft to its fleet as and when the market conditions stabilise….
